Lubrizol giving back in Kirklees…

Name and organisation

Chris Hart-Jones from Lubrizol

What does Lubrizol do?

Lubrizol (Huddersfield) has been part of the Leeds Road manufacturing site since 1916. IT has been owned by ICI, Zeneca, Avecia, before being acquired by Lubrizol in 2004. Lubrizol combine complex specialty chemicals to optimize the quality, performance and value of their customers’ products while reducing their environmental impact.

So,how did they first get involved with volunteering?

Lubrizol first contacted the TSL volunteer team in March 2018 looking to do some volunteering to give some time back to their local community. In less than 2 years the range of activities that they have got involved with has been far and wide ranging. These include:-

Uniform Exchange (Coats for Kids) Both Huddersfield and Barnsley staff arranged for a collection of children’s coats to donate to the UE. Together they donated over 100 children’s winter coats which could be donated to children within Huddersfield to wear during winter. 8 volunteers also spent the day with Kate France helping her sort through the many uniforms and coats that had been donated by the general public.

MENCAP in Kirklees Volunteers from both Huddersfield and Barnsley spent the day improving the outside areas of a shared home so residents could sit outside, grow vegetables and generally enjoy the space.

River Holme Connections Trust Volunteers from both the Huddersfield and Barnsley sites spent the day with the connections trust to help build bird and bat boxes whilst clearing rubbish from the area.

PPE donations to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. The Huddersfield site donated gloves, FFP2 filter masks, Goggles and suits to help in the fight against COVID-19

24-hour live stream disco One of our employees at Lubrizol Huddersfield streamed a live 24 hour disco night in aid of Overgate hospice and raised well over £3000. Lubrizol also donated towards this amount.

Food Bank Donation Staff at Huddersfield donated food, dried food (pasta etc.), toiletries and nappies and wipes to a local Food bank in Huddersfield prior to Christmas

Fueling the Sleigh – The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust Both Huddersfield and Barnsley staff gave up a day to support the LCYC to prepare the Christmas boxes which were being delivered to Children throughout the UK who would be spending Christmas in hospital

River Holme Connections Trust Volunteers from both the Huddersfield and Barnsley sites spent the day with the connections trust to help build bird and bat boxes whilst clearing rubbish from the area.

That’s a lot of activities in a short period of time…

Sharron Wilkinson explained “When I first met Lubrizol about 2 years ago, they were interested in giving back to the community of Kirklees but had not done any formal volunteering before as a business.  They were really keen to get involved and develop their CSR activity within their local community.

“Their enthusiasm and dedication as a company has meant that they have followed through on this initial intention planning many volunteering days (committing many staff hours) within a whole range of organisations”

We have been really happy to  make some of these connections for them and the time that they have given to our local charities/voluntary groups has made a massive difference.

And their next plans?

TSL have just asked for their help with any information that they could share with the charity sector in relation to “the workplace and Covid”. Lubrizol are more than happy to help and are looking at arranging online support sessions over zoom…..
