Macmillan Singing Group Leader and Pianist or Guitarist

We are the Macmillan Information and Support Service based on the Greenlea Oncology Unit at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and at the Jayne Garforth Macmillan Unit at Calderdale Royal Hospital. We have a member of staff in each of the centres and a team of dedicated volunteers. We’re here to help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can, providing practical, financial and emotional support. So whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you. We can be a listening ear when patients and carers need someone to talk to. We can help with money worries – referring people for benefits advice and grants, as well as Blue Badges, home adaptations and other services such as psychology, counselling and work support. We have lots of information about cancer treatment and managing side effects and can direct and refer people to support groups and services who could help.

Opportunities Overview
  • Volunteer Role Title
Macmillan Singing Group Leader and Pianist or Guitarist
  • About the Volunteer Role
We are looking for help to run our new Macmillan Singing Group which meets fortnightly at the Chapel in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, on alternate Thursdays 4pm til 5.30pm. The new Macmillan Singing Group started in July 2019 and is for anyone affected by cancer, including patients and family members, as well as for any staff working in the field of cancer in the NHS Trust. There is lots of research currently which states that singing has significant wellbeing benefits and we are keen to grow this group, for the benefit of anyone affected by cancer locally. We need another singing group leader and a second pianist or guitarist. These posts may be ideal for a retired music teacher, or anyone with singing/choir experience. The group is very informal and all voices are welcome. Once the singing group is established in the future, we may potentially look to get involved in some fundraising activities for Macmillan, though essentially it is an opportunity for people affected by cancer to come together, meet new people and simply enjoy music.
