Independent Visitors is a befriending scheme for children and young people in care and who have recently left care. Children are matched with a volunteer who takes them out once a month to do a positive activity and build a long-term consistent friendship. Our scheme matches children who are looked after by Sheffield’s Local Authority with Independent Visitors. Currently, we are looking for a volunteer in Kirklees, as we have a referral for a Sheffield child, that is living in the Kirklees area.
Volunteer Role TitleIndependent Visitor
About the Volunteer Role
Volunteers are called ‘Independent Visitors’ because they are a truly ‘independent’ person outside of the care system. Having someone completely separate to do activities with and talk to, is invaluable to our children and young people.
Independent Visitors give much needed consistency to a child or young person, becoming a safe person they can trust. Through a volunteer’s consistent friendship, they help to build a child’s self-esteem, self-worth and confidence.
The role involves helping a child to develop new interests, skills, and hobbies. Volunteers need to have time once a month to take part in an activity of their child’s choosing. Activities could include going to the cinema, bowling, painting a pot, going to a restaurant, riding a bike or a walk in the park etc.
We are looking for a volunteer in the Kirklees area to be an Independent Visitor for a happy, funny, and active young boy aged 13. He would like to be matched with an Independent Visitor who he can have fun with, who is chatty, and who is a good listener.
We aim to match children with volunteers who have similar interests and hobbies; this young person enjoys playing on video games, his favourite game is Fortnight. His hobbies are playing football and boxing. When he gets older, he would like to be a Fireman or Police Officer. And he loves pizza, burgers, lasagne, pasta and tuna sandwiches.
If you think you could be an Independent Visitor for this young boy, please get in touch, we would love to hear from you.
