  • About the Volunteer Role
This is an ideal role for people training in health care and social work, or anyone who loves working with older people. In this role you will be helping to relieve isolation and loneliness by forming and developing befriending relationships with carers when they have a break from their caring responsibilities. The volunteer and carer will meet up in a mutually agreed public place, maybe for coffee initially. As the befriending develops they may accompany carers to various support groups, to the library, to other activities or help carers to develop new hobbies or interests. Sometimes it may only involve a friendly chat on the phone. As a Befriender Volunteer you will receive regular phone calls from the Carers Count Volunteer Co-ordinator to see how they are getting on and will be invited to attend regular meetings. Volunteers will need to be empathetic with good listening skills and an understanding of the impact of caring responsibilities. Carers can be people of all ages and stages of life and everyone's needs are different.
