Do You Love Books, Chatting & Reading?

What: Therapeutic reading group volunteers, working with people mental health problems, dementia, or who are isolated, and their carers

When: regular volunteering

Where: in your local community (anywhere in Kirklees)

Our colleagues at Third Sector Leaders Kirklees have Big Lottery funding to run a new project called Words in Mind, and need volunteers to help set up and run therapeutic reading groups in their communities with the aim of helping and supporting people who are isolated, have long-term conditions or have mental health problems.

Words in Mind will work with existing local community groups and organisations to  set up the groups all over Kirklees in community centres, places of worship, libraries, in-patient wards, care homes, day care centres – anywhere that people get together.  Volunteers will be given full training (in what’s called, bibliotherapy) and will learn how to  encourage people to read together in groups and use the written word (poems, short stories, novels, articles) to encourage discussion, reminiscing and exploring thoughts and feelings.

For more information about opportunities and training, contact Elaine Duffy – elaine.d@vkirklees.org.uk, 07776 588692.
